#TopColour: How Alankar Jewelarts’ individualistic coloured gemstone pieces evolve as they take shape
There is no set design language for each piece that takes at least 2-2.5 months to create, with the entire team of artisans and the management collaborating on design
Meerut: Alankar Jewelarts has been a force to reckon with in Meerut’s high jewellery scene. The brand has ventured into creating unique coloured gemstone pieces which stand out as autonomous projects of craft. Samarth Prakash, MD, Alankar Jewelarts takes The Retail Jeweller through the process of crafting these highly individualistic pieces, starting from sourcing raw materials to execution of each piece.
“The pieces mostly comprise earrings made of rubies, a lot of emeralds and tanzanites. There are rectangle cabochons, pear-shaped cabochons, cut stones and diamonds individually certified by GIA. Besides, there are pointer diamonds of 30-40 cents to 1 carat which are also individually certified. We also create necklaces and rings,” Prakash says.
The pre-requisite for each of these pieces is a solid inventory of coloured gemstones. Each piece takes 2-2.5 months to create. The brand plans how each fancy-shaped coloured gemstone is going to be set and fit because they are heavy in general. The process starts with the artisans getting an overview of all the stones available. Then, they start designing the piece with inputs on the selection and alignment of each stone from the management. The raw mould is then made to check the fitting and finally, the process culminates with studding stones and finishing.
As a fourth-generation jeweller, Prakash takes pride in this range of high jewellery which has been enjoying a steady movement ever since it was first made in 2021. Their clientele consists of several generations of loyal jewellery lovers who reside across a 400 km radius of the showroom in Meerut.
“These are high jewellery pieces and enjoy a customer base of people fond of such designs only. We have noticed a rise in demand for coloured gemstones after the pandemic, and this jewellery line is meant for after-parties, cocktail parties and anniversary engagements where Western wear is the norm,” he explains.
Alankar Jewelarts houses this jewellery line in a separate lounge, a private area of 300 sq ft adjoining the showroom. The clientele prefers that privacy and arrives according to their convenience. The lounge also has a dress room dedicated for buyers to try on their dresses with the jewellery, in a premium ambience. “We have been into coloured gemstone jewellery for the past 2-3 years. We only use IGI-certified natural, non-graded coloured gemstones,” says Prakash.
