Peridot to shine brighter in India’s lightweight colour gemstone fashion
August has a new trend in gemstones. We are talking of the month’s birthstone, peridot, also called the evening emerald, which is bolstered by top-notch global brands such as Bucherer, Bulgari, Theo Fennell and Pomellato every year. Taking cue of the trend, Instagram handles of Indian brands such as Atul Jewellers and N Gopaldaas Jewellers are floating different forms of jewellery with Peridot-studded designs in the category.
There is a lot of excitement around this gemstone that stands out for its earthy hue. The brands are talking about the crucial traits of strength and morality that this stone offers. Peridot is also referred to as the ‘gem of the sun’, and the stone unlocks a host of new opportunities in the lightweight jewellery fashion segment.
This is because of the distinct light green hue of peridot that separates it from its easy reference, emerald, says Sulabh Jain, store head, Atul Jewellers, Delhi. “If you look at an emerald in a dark room, you’ll face difficulty spotting it, but the Peridot shows its fluorescence even under those conditions. This is because of its unique brilliance and fire,” he said. The brand is coming up with a new range of Peridot jewellery to be launched sometime around October this year.
Talking about the unique features of Peridot, Jain said that it relates to the heart chakra and takes care of negative emotions. “Pandemic has infused a lot of negativity and this stone safeguards the wearer by helping them stay calm.In terms of fashion, Peridot works just right for daily wear because of its astrological significance,” he said, adding that people would prefer to wear peridot jewellery pieces to work or for a casual day-to-day experience to keep the spirits high at times when the country is bracing for the impact of the third Covid wave. Occasional fashion will not be suitable for this stone.
Stylistically, the yellowish-green tinge of Peridot is being lapped up the world over and Jain believes that will impact Indian colour gemstone fashion as well. “The reason why Peridot is called the evening emerald is because of its unchanged appearance even during absence of sunlight. Also, emerald has for long ruled with its indomitable green hue. Fashionistas are accepting this new hue of green and we expect Indian jewellery circles to explore with Peridot aggressively soon,” Jain concluded.
