GJEPC and NEHHDC partner to establish Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery in Guwahati

The premier institute has branches located across India, including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Surat, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Udupi 

Guwahati In a significant boost to the gem and jewellery industry in the Northeast, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) and the Northeastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Limited (NEHHDC) have joined hands to establish the Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery (IIGJ) in Guwahati. 

The partnership aims to provide specialised training and business development support to artisans and entrepreneurs in the region, aligning with the government’s PM Vishwakarma (Goldsmith) initiative. The IIGJ will serve as a hub for industry-aligned skilling and training, fostering a vibrant ecosystem for the growth of the local jewellery industry. 

Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony, Debasish Biswas, CEO of IIGJ, emphasised the institute’s commitment to creating a niche center in the Northeast, offering world-class training to local artisans and entrepreneurs. He expressed confidence that the partnership with NEHHDC would contribute significantly to the development of the region’s gem and jewellery sector. 

Key officials from both organisations and government departments attended the event, including Siddharth Himmatsinghka, COO of GJEPC, Mr. Kaushik Ghosh, Regional Director of GJEPC Eastern Region, and Lokesh Kumar Parganiha, Deputy Director and HoD of MSME-DFO, Guwahati.

The establishment of the IIGJ in Guwahati is expected to provide a major impetus to the region’s gem and jewellery industry, creating new opportunities for artisans and entrepreneurs and contributing to the overall economic development of the Northeast.
