“Our commitment to technological advancement and innovation has been the core of our work.”

Amit Soni, Director, KIK Jewells, Kolkata, shares his insights on how the advantages of technology and skilled artisans have enabled the company to launch innovative products and stay ahead of competition.
The Retail Jeweller (TRJ): What are your strengths, and what makes you stand out from your competition?
Over the years, we have noted that our strengths lie in our location and our team of skilled artisans. We have been based in Kolkata for the past three generations and have developed a keen understanding of our local market. Moreover, it has also enabled us to work with experienced Bengali artisans, who are renowned for their craftsmanship and are the creative force behind our designs. These aspects have allowed us to have the upper hand among our competitors in introducing new collections, adapting to evolving customer tastes, and completing bulk orders.
TRJ: How important do you think technological progress is for business?
Our commitment to technological advancement and innovation has been the core of our work. Therefore, we keep developing our systems to achieve our design vision. This is reflected in our modern manufacturing unit at Kolkata’s jewellery park, equipped with the latest technology. This allows us to add value to our customers’ purchases and ensure timely deliveries.
TRJ: Please share your thoughts on emerging jewellery trends in India. Which design concept do you follow?
We have noted an increase in the use of technology in various fields after the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is no different for jewellery manufacturing. Emerging technologies for design have improved our product offerings, while social media has broadened our market reach. We observed this when we launched a new antique bridal gold jewellery collection for our clients in North India and received requests from our South Indian clients for it.
TRJ: What improvements have you observed in the ever-changing retail market?
The organisation of the jewellery sector has been mostly independent until now. Many legacy brands are adopting the corporate approach and are expanding through new stores, franchises, and developing their existing stores for better customer experiences. Their business operations are also focusing more on human resource management, staff training, and better work delegation. Even in terms of designs, retailers are moving away from traditional designs and looking for innovation in products. These aspects are crucial for the further development of the jewellery industry.
TRJ: What design innovations are you working on for your upcoming collections?
Due to rising gold rates and evolving customer preferences for wearable jewellery, we have been exploring ways to expand our product offerings. Therefore, designers, sales team, and artisans brainstormed to launch a new handmade antique collection in gold with coloured gemstones and varied settings.
