The Chennai-based jeweller took up the wardrobe work to commemorate its 45 years in the silver industry. The wardrobe is 7 ft in height and weighs 158.78 kilograms
Chennai: Leading silver jewellery retailer Sukra Jewellery, based in Mylapore, has unveiled what it claims to be the ‘world’s largest silver wardrobe’, which has officially been recognized by Guinness World Records. The wardrobe is now on show at its store on North Mada Street, Mylapore.
The wardrobe work was executed to commemorate the company’s 45 years in the silver industry. On October 22, Durga Stalin, wife of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, unveiled the silver wardrobe, in the presence of Nithin Kalkiraju, CEO and Head of Design of Sukra Jewellery.
Nithin Kalkiraju said that every aspect of this work, from the door handle to the hinges, screws, nails, nuts and bolts, is handcrafted in 92.5% pure silver, reflecting Sukra’s expertise in silver craftsmanship.
Standing seven feet tall, three feet wide and two feet deep, this wardrobe weighs 158.78 kilograms and is handcrafted from 92.5% silver. The design features intricate flora and fauna elements inspired by traditional Indian painting styles from around 16th and 17th century, such as Pichwai and Rajput.
A striking highlight is the fascia, where a peacock gracefully perches on a branch, overlooking a vibrant meadow. Each feather is meticulously crafted to showcase exquisite detail.
The design work commenced in April 2024, followed by manufacturing from July 2024. Under the supervision of Kalkiraju, a dedicated team of 12 silversmiths completed the special piece in the first week of October 2024, after taking over 6900 man-hours.
Founded by A. Kalkiraju in 1979, Sukra Jewellery has been principally into silver retailing. It holds two other records – the largest silver sculpture certified by Guinness Book of Records and the largest silver clock certified by World Records Academy, USA. According to its website, Sukra Jewellery is the first silver showroom in India to get ISO 9001 accreditation, and the first retailer in South India to obtain the BIS silver hallmarking licence.
Notably, offering artefacts alongside jewellery allows retailers to cater to a wider audience and meet various customer preferences, from decorative items to functional pieces. Silver artefacts also appeal to customers looking for unique, traditional or artisanal pieces, while making for popular gifts for occasions like weddings, anniversaries and milestones, expanding sales opportunities.
Silver retail in South India has a rich tradition and is influenced by cultural practices, festivals and weddings. Cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Coimbatore are key hubs for silver retail, featuring both large jewellery chains and local artisans.
