The park will have an NABL-accredited testing lab, and is expected to generate direct employment for 2,000 people and indirect employment for 1,500 in the jewellery industry
Coimbatore: Coimbatore will soon get a dedicated jewellery industrial park, to be built by the Tamil Nadu Government at a cost of Rs 126 crore. This was announced by TN Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at a government function held recently. The announcement came in response to a demand put forward by the Coimbatore Gold Jewellery Manufacturers and the Coimbatore Goldsmiths’ Associations.
“Coimbatore, a key centre in the global gold jewellery industry, will see the establishment of this jewellery park in Kurichi with an investment of Rs 126 crore. The park will be equipped with all the essential facilities, including a NABL-accredited testing lab, and is expected to generate direct employment for 2,000 people and indirect employment for 1,500,” the CM was quoted by The Hindu as saying.
The Coimbatore Gold Jewellery Manufacturers and the Coimbatore Goldsmiths Association had earlier sent petitions to the CM, calling for a jewellery park in Coimbatore district.
As Coimbatore is one of the largest gold jewellery making clusters in the country, it deserves to have an integrated facility for the jewellery sector, the petition said.
Among other demands, both the associations wanted power supply at subsidised cost and development of other infrastructure across the city. They also rooted for an NABL accredited lab for the jewellery sector and a welfare board for goldsmiths.
Coimbatore is a significant hub for the jewellery industry, with a well-established jewellery manufacturing ecosystem. Several initiatives such as the Coimbatore Jewellery Cluster (locatedaround the Peelamedu, Ukkadam, and other industrial zones) and SIDCO Industrial Estate already focus on jewellery production and related activities. They help in the overall development of the jewellery industry by promoting training, technology and marketing.
