Jewellery Manufacturers Appeal to Election Officers to Not Disturb Business
A day after the model code of conduct came into force, the Coimbatore Jewellery Manufactures Association submitted appealed to the state election commission to not disturb flow of their business. They appealed for election officers to not detain people carrying jewellery or the products, if they had all requisite documents on hand. They also appealed for officers not to flash detained products and people in the media, before their documents were verified. Members of the association, wrote to the chief election commissioner of India and met the district collector, K Rajamani, on Tuesday and submitted a copy of the letter.
“We manufacture 200 kg of ornaments a day and sell to various parts of the country and even export. We are the third highest manufacturer of gold jewellery,” said association president, B Muthuvenkatraman. “We being manufacturers often have to carry unfinished goods from one place to another. Often the manufacturer himself or herself will carry products to explain their uniqueness or quality to sellers,” he said. “But we do a clean business with no political connections or transactions whatsoever,” he added.
The manufacturers appealed to election officers to not detain the person carrying the goods, if they have the necessary documents. “We assure the officers, that every person carrying high value products will carry their GST certificate, gold stock ledger, sales tax invoice or delivery bill, delivery challan, cash ledger, proof of bank statement and authorization of staff by company. So if the documents are in place, they should let the product and person go,” said Muthuvenkatraman. “Assuming they are not convinced, they can hold back documents for further verification but at least let the person and product go. We are registered manufactures and will not abscond,” he added.
The manufacturers said last time during state assembly elections, business came to a grinding halt with people getting detained in Nagapattinam, Madurai, Salem among others. Detained high value products too were returned only after the model code of conduct, they added. “Flashing of products and detained manufacturers in the media, especially genuine people, affects their future in the business and their families. We don’t mind them detaining people without documents,” said Muthuvenkatraman.
