Mumbai: Members from the Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) and Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB) convened in Mumbai to discuss the potential relocation of diamond trading operations to the new SDB facility in Khajod, on the outskirts of Surat.

The meeting was attended by dignitaries such as Govind Dholakia, Chairman of the SDB and SRK Exports, Lalji Patel, Vice-chairman of Dharmanandan Diamonds, as well as BDB President Anup Mehta and Kirit Bhansali, Vice-chairman of the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council.

In the meeting, Dholakia requested BDB traders to shift their business to SDB. Many traders from the Jain community sought cubicles, as they observe Chovyar, a practice of eating their evening meal before sunset. “The Jain traders asked for a temple and a hall to eat in before sunset. We have assured them that their issues would be looked into,” Lalji Patel said.

The discussions focused on the logistics and benefits of moving diamond trading operations from Mumbai to the newly developed SDB, a move that could consolidate and enhance the efficiency of the diamond trading industry.

Lalji Patel, Vice-Chairman, Dharmanandan Diamonds said that they had received a positive response during the SDB meeting

Lalji Patel said, “We received a positive response in our meeting… all have assured that they will start their offices from July 7. The committee members of SDB will also start operations on July 7. All the issues raised by the brokers and traders of BDB will be looked into.”

Jayesh Labdi, a trader with BDB, echoed the sentiment and added, “Diamond merchants who own offices in BDB will not shift their offices to SDB, but they will start operating from Surat as well. While one person will look after the Mumbai office, another will look after the Surat office.”

Prior to this meeting, SDB representatives engaged with traders and brokers during sessions held at Surat’s Mahidarpura and Varachha diamond markets, advocating for the shift to Khajod.

Adding a cultural and community dimension to the discussions, traders at the meeting requested the inclusion of a Jain temple within the BDB premises, alongside the provision of a dedicated space for communal suppers. This reflects the traders’ desire to maintain their cultural practices within the business environment.

Further talks are expected as stakeholders continue to evaluate the implications of this potential relocation.
