De Beers unveils its ‘dismantlable cork-made’ sustainable booth at IIJS Premiere 2024

The booth incorporates various innovative initiatives to advance the sustainability goals of the De Beers Group
Mumbai: Paul Rowley, Executive Vice President of Diamond Trading at De Beers Group, inaugurated the company’s sustainable booth at IIJS Premiere 2024. Demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability, De Beers has introduced a fully eco-friendly booth at this year’s event. The De Beers 2023 Sustainability Report highlights the company’s dedication to environmental preservation and outlines its sustainability targets through 2030. Al Cook, CEO, emphasized in the report, “Building Forever runs through everything we do at De Beers Group – and sustainable development is at the heart of our business.”
The booth is a testament to De Beers’ commitment to sustainability. Constructed entirely from 100% recyclable, biodegradable, and reusable materials, it achieves a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional materials. The booth’s structure uses cork, a renewable resource harvested from oak trees. This process allows the trees to regenerate after the bark is collected, ensuring minimal environmental impact. Additionally, the booth features OSB boards made from large wood shavings, providing another sustainable alternative. The booth can be dismantled and reused, and has been already used in other exhibitions globally.
Paul Rowley noted the significant growth potential, stating, “With our focus on exquisite, responsibly sourced diamond jewellery, and a commitment to presenting collections that blend the best of Indian and international designs, the opportunities are vast. We are eager to continue partnering with our industry colleagues in India, the hub of the diamond industry’s midstream, to shape a future of collective and sustainable success.”
Beyond its eco-friendly construction, the booth showcases advanced tools for ensuring ethical diamond sourcing. It includes ‘Diamond Verification Machines’ and the ‘tracr’ application, which enables comprehensive tracking of diamonds from their origin to the final product. These innovations are designed to enhance transparency and build consumer trust, crucial for retailers.
