Mumbai: The Surat Diamond Bourse is set to restart operations – after a lull of seven months– a development that is more a reason for cheer as Ministry of Finance announced slew of duty cuts in import of gold, silver and platinum. Several sops for the diamond industry were also announced.

Kickstarting the buzz on social media, SDB uploaded a reel on Instagram, acquainting prospects about the wealth of opportunities this centralised facility is slated to provide. Mahesh Gadhavi, CEO of SDB stated, “The entire trader’s community entrusted us and the SDB committee that the SDB project would not have any delays. So, we ensured that things were done in a timely manner,” he said.

Surat Diamond Bourse, boasts of being the world’s largest trading hub spread across an area of 600 hectares and houses 4500 offices for national and international traders. While the smallest office space is of 300 sq ft, the largest is of a lakh sq. ft of space. 200 odd traders have recently reopened offices, a news media report reported.

According to Morphogenesis Principal Architects Founding Partner, Manish Rastogi, the architecture of the trade centre demanded a need for automatic climate control wherein the temperature of the courtyard would be 4-5 degrees lesser than the outside temperature. There was also a need for the trading hub to have an architecture that would maintain 100% daylight but without glare. Hence the place demanded a ‘micro-climate’ of own, the Rastogi said. Besides this, ‘Solar control’ to reduce direct heating because of sunlight, ‘Wind analyses to evaluate and maximize natural ventilation, orientation according to the Sun and wind direction and, energy performance– for energy efficiency were other factors evaluated for designing the trade centre.

The diamond bourse’s architecture imbibes a mythological concept “The chakra of universe revolves within Panchtatva,” wherein there is a belief that the five elements fire, earth, water, sky and air, when in balance bring peace, prosperity, happiness, and success.

“We are giving them (Diamond traders) world-class facilities at the same rate. Around 400 traders from Surat and Mumbai have confirmed they will start operations in SDB from mid-July. After the first 1,000 offices are filled up, the market will pick up on its own,” Navadiya was quoted as saying.

The Surat Diamond Bourse is set up to serve as an end-to-end solution to the entire trading community wherein demand for easy access to international markets, reduced dealing with multiple brokers, and economic viability of production could be met. The trade centre was also set up in order to reduce other bottlenecks such as traders’ needs to travel frequently between Surat and Mumbai and back.
