IIJS Premiere 2024 shatters record with over Rs 1 lakh crore in business
The show featured over 3,600 stalls and 2,100 exhibitors, drawing more than 50,000 buyers
Mumbai: The India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) Premiere 2024, one of the world’s largest B2B gem and jewellery exhibitions, has set a new benchmark by generating an astounding Rs. 1 lakh crore in business over six days. Organised by the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), the event took place from August 8-12 at the JIO World Convention Centre and August 9-13 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, NESCO Goregaon, Mumbai.
This year’s IIJS, themed “Brilliant Bharat,” marked its 40th edition with a massive exhibition area of 135,000 square meters (1.45 million square feet). The show featured over 3,600 stalls and 2,100 exhibitors, drawing more than 50,000 buyers. The event saw participation from 15 international delegations representing 13 countries, including Cambodia, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and Uzbekistan.
Concurrent with IIJS Premiere was the IGJME Premiere, a machinery and technology expo held from August 9-13. This exhibition showcased over 220 companies and 320 stalls, including an Italy Pavilion, reflecting its global reach.
Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce & Industry, visited the event on August 10 and announced the reintroduction of the Diamond Imprest Licence, a key policy initiative aimed at supporting the gem and jewellery sector. He addressed industry concerns over high duty rates on gold, silver, and platinum, which have impacted industry and job creation.
Goyal highlighted the resilience of India’s domestic market, which is compensating for export losses due to the global recession. He also emphasized the government’s ongoing negotiations with G7 countries and the European Union, aiming for fair trade practices and transparency in the diamond industry.
Maharashtra Governor, C. P. Radhakrishnan, inaugurated the IIJS at the JIO World Convention Centre, praising the GJEPC for its role in enhancing the global stature of the event. He expressed confidence that IIJS would become the largest gem and jewellery show in the world.
Dr. Harshdeep Kamble, Principal Secretary (Industries) for the Government of Maharashtra, announced plans to include a new exhibition and convention center and promote ‘smart manufacturing’ in the upcoming Industrial Policy.
GJEPC chairman Vipul Shah expressed pride in the event’s success, noting that IIJS Premiere 2024 showcased exceptional designs and innovation. He also emphasized the event’s role in expanding global trade and attracting international buyers.
Paul Rowley, Executive Vice President of Diamond Trading at De Beers Group, highlighted India’s pivotal role in the global diamond industry and announced a new campaign to rejuvenate interest in diamonds among future generations.
Brand Ambassador for GJEPC, former Miss World Manushi Chhillar, celebrated India’s jewellery heritage and the event’s role in showcasing Indian craftsmanship to the world.
Nirav Bhansali, Convener of National Exhibitions for GJEPC, praised the show’s success, noting its focus on sustainability, technological enhancements, and the celebration of young industry leaders.
