List of additional districts covered under fourth phase of mandatory hallmarking notified through the Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts (Amendment) Order, 2024, dated November 5, 2024

New Delhi: On November 5, 2024, the Central Government issued a new order to amend the Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts Order, 2020. This amendment aims to further revise the list of States and districts to which the order will apply, and adds 18 districts to the list. The amendment came into effect from November 6.

The list of the States and districts to which the order applies are outlined in the updated Annexure of the order. The Order currently applies to 26 States in India.

Here is the list of 18 new additions to the list as notified by the Central Government on November 5, 2024:

The new amendment is a significant step towards ensuring the quality and purity of gold jewellery and artefacts in India, protecting consumer interests, and promoting fair trade practices.

On September 6, 2023, the Centre had notified the third phase of mandatory hallmarking effective from September 8, 2023, adding a list of 55 more districts to be covered under the mandatory hallmarking system, wherein a hallmarking centre had been set up post implementation of the second phase of the mandatory hallmarking order, taking the total number of districts covered under mandatory hallmarking to 343. With the current addition of 18 districts, the number goes up to 361.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has been successful in implementation of Mandatory Hallmarking in the country in four phases. Since the implementation of mandatory hallmarking, number of registered jewellers have increased. Nearly 30 crore articles of gold jewellery have been hallmarked with HUID so far.
