Tiruvannamalai– In a bid to enhance awareness and adherence to hallmarking standards within the jewellery industry, the Chennai division of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) orchestrated a comprehensive session in Tiruvannamalai on Sunday.  

Gathering a cohort of 75 jewellers and pawnbrokers, the session delved into the intricacies of hallmarking for gold and silver, a critical facet of ensuring quality and authenticity within the trade. Under the patronage of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, the BIS elucidated its array of schemes, ranging from product certification (ISI mark) to hallmarking of precious metals and laboratory services. 

Throughout the event, participants were enlightened on the significance, genesis, and evolution of hallmarking initiatives. Pertinent topics such as the BIS hallmarking scheme, regulatory frameworks, the obligations incumbent upon jewellers, as well as the nuances of Indian Standards and online registration procedures, were comprehensively covered. 

Notable figures from the BIS, including B.J. Gowtham, Scientist-D, and G. Bhavani, Director and Head, both representing the Chennai division, actively engaged with attendees, fostering dialogue and understanding on the pivotal role of hallmarking in maintaining industry integrity and consumer trust.
