The new flagship more than doubles the area of the brand’s earlier dual building location in the same area, and draws on the designer’s connection with Kolkata in its ‘living museum’ vibes
New Delhi: Sabyasachi has opened a new flagship store at The Citadel in Mehrauli, New Delhi, expanding its retail presence with a 26,000 sq. ft space. The store more than doubles the footprint of the brand’s previous dual-building location in the same area and includes a dedicated high jewellery salon and accessories parlour.
The opening marks the latest phase of a retail strategy Sabyasachi has been shaping for almost two decades. As Indian luxury fashion was largely centred around compact boutiques and multi-brand stores, the designer pioneered large-format standalone spaces designed to offer a complete, immersive expression of the brand. “I have never believed that a luxury store should simply sell products. It should inspire curiosity, preserve culture and create memory. Commerce may bring people through the door, but culture is what makes them return. As the world becomes increasingly digital, spaces that celebrate craftsmanship, beauty and human connection become more valuable than ever,” said fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Founder and Creative Director of his eponymous brand.
The flagship draws on the founder’s connection with Kolkata, with its design referencing landmarks including Chowringhee and Hogg’s Market. The space brings together the brand’s couture and jewellery collections with antique furniture, heritage textiles, artwork, vintage objects and Indian curiosities.
The store features 120 chandeliers, nearly 200 antique carpets and 300 original paintings from the Sabyasachi Art Foundation. More than 100 antique textiles, mirrors and decorative objects are also incorporated into the space, alongside mother-of-pearl inlay, pink Sarrancolin marble and life-sized statues.
A bespoke installation inspired by the tramcars of Kolkata forms part of the store’s design. The space also features an immersive playlist curated by Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Bengali tea rituals, adding elements of the designer’s cultural references to the retail environment.
The showroom’s layout includes labyrinthine corridors designed around a collection of objects and artworks, reflecting Sabyasachi’s approach to combining fashion, art and heritage within its retail spaces.
The new location brings the wider Sabyasachi universe of couture, jewellery, art and collectibles into a single flagship format.
Sabyasachi Mukherjee launched his eponymous label in 1999. The brand builds its retail strength on immersive ‘living museum’ flagships and deep artisanal craftsmanship rather than traditional high-volume storefronts. The brand now operates a network of seven flagship stores, including a New York flagship, and dedicated jewellery retail ateliers in Hyderabad and Dubai.
