Jewellery Retail is Evolving—Meet the Store Makers Leading the Shift

RJI

Nilesh Rathod, CEO & Founder of Atmosphere – The Store Makers in conversation with The Retail Jeweller

As India’s jewellery industry transforms—from stately flagship stores steeped in tradition to sleek, contemporary concept spaces—retailers are rethinking what their physical environments truly represent. Can a store embody a brand’s story? Can it shape how a customer feels, interacts, and eventually buys?

For Atmosphere, a pan-India Design & Build partner, the answer is yes. With a diverse client base across India, the firm brings clarity, emotion, and purpose into every retail footprint it helps create.

How do you define what a jewellery store should feel like in today’s landscape?

A store is no longer just a structure—it’s an extension of the brand. Whether someone walks in casually or for a significant purchase, the space should support that journey. We design around three fundamentals: trust, flow, and emotion. It’s about intuitive navigation, clean product presentation, and just the right touch of drama, allowing the product and experience to shine without distraction.

You’ve worked with Aisshpra Gems & Jewels and Akoirah by Augmont Gold—two vastly different brands. How do you balance tradition and innovation across clients?

Each project starts with a clean slate. For Aisshpra, a heritage name, the goal was to preserve its legacy while building a 10,000 sq ft store in Lucknow. We were deeply mindful of detailing and traditional cues, completing the entire space in just 64 days.

For Akoirah, a modern lab-grown diamond brand, we designed a neat, chic boutique in Pune with a focus on relaxed elegance. It was all about lounge-like comfort and minimalism.

Then there’s Candere by Kalyan Jewellers, which straddles both worlds. We recently completed their Erode store with more underway. Across all three, the common thread is a customised approach that aligns with brand identity and evolving consumer behaviour— where each store is not only a showcase but a strategic business asset serving the desired business outcomes.

What are some common pain points you solve for jewellers?

Speed and consistency top the list. Retailers often struggle to maintain design intent across stores or meet launch deadlines. Our end-to-end setup—including in-house fixture manufacturing—helps fast-track timelines while ensuring design fidelity.

Another key area is customer journey planning—helping shoppers explore deeply without confusion or pressure. From clearly zoned product sections to private consultation areas and optimised POS points, every detail affects engagement. We strongly believe that detail is where design meets performance – right from design to build, when execution meets purpose, the space itself speaks volumes for the brand.

What makes a store “high-performance” in your view?

A high-performance store blends aesthetic appeal with commercial intent. It’s not just about how it looks—it’s about how it works. That means ergonomic fixtures, lighting calibrated to highlight different jewellery types, and layouts that reflect how people make decisions.

Our role is to integrate creativity with precision—ensuring the space doesn’t just feel good, but helps move product and drive results. If the store is beautiful, functional, and increases conversion—it’s doing its job.

What’s next for Atmosphere in the jewellery segment?

We’re delighted to be continuing our partnerships with Aisshpra and Akoirah. With Aisshpra’s recently launched Varanasi store and Akoirah’s second boutique in Lower Parel, Mumbai underway, we are grateful for these repeat collaborations, based on what matters the most – trust.

We also have an exciting new crop of lab-grown diamond brands and heritage jewellers seeking modern formats in the pipeline. What makes this industry special is the shared sense of purpose—we often feel like part of the client’s extended team. That camaraderie turns good design into something meaningful.

As jewellery retail evolves across India, store design has become a strategic lever—shaping trust, experience, and growth. In Atmosphere, we found not just design finesse, but rare clarity, discipline, and empathy for each brand’s journey. Their spaces are built with purpose, where every detail is tuned to perception and performance with precision. Quietly but confidently, Atmosphere – The Store Makers is emerging as one of the most respected and forward-thinking partners in the jewellery space.
