Environment, ethics, philanthropy, and economic responsibilities

The Sustainable Gemstone ‘Hues’

Mumbai: Tanishq recently released its ‘Hues’ collection, specifically highlighting their natural, ethically sourced gemstones. Alongside the launch, the brand also outlined its new ‘Gem-Sourcing Protocol’ which ensures that every coloured gemstone—from sapphires to emeralds—is tracked for their environmental impact. This initiative addressed the often-overlooked environmental footprint of coloured stone mining. By integrating these ethical benchmarks into their mainstream premium collections, Tanishq is educating Indian consumers that luxury and ‘earth-first’ sourcing are no longer mutually exclusive concepts in high jewellery.

The Circular Gold Exchange Drive

New Delhi: Senco Gold & Diamonds reported that their ‘Old Gold Exchange’ programs now account for nearly 45-50% of their total sales. CEO Suvankar Sen has reframed this initiative as a major sustainability success story. By encouraging the recycling of existing gold, Senco is significantly reducing the demand for newly mined metal, effectively promoting a circular economy within the retail space. This approach helps stabilise gold supply while positioning the brand as a champion of responsible consumption during times of extreme price volatility.

The ‘Micro-Entrepreneur’ Development

PC Jewellers recently signed a landmark MoU with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) which is designed to create a structured ecosystem for skill development. This project aims to train and onboard 2,00,000 micro-entrepreneurs across India over the next five years. By focusing on Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, this program provides business-minded individuals with technical jewellery-making and retail skills, effectively promoting self-employment and strengthening the jewellery economy. This initiative makes PC Jewellers a key driver of the ‘Skill India’ mission within the gems and jewellery industry.

The ‘Crafting Futures’ Artisan Ecosystem

Thrissur: Kalyan Jewellers launched ‘Crafting Futures’, a CSR campaign dedicated to the long-term sustainability of the karigar (artisan) community. With a pledge of ₹3 crore, this initiative focused on upgrading traditional workshops into modernised artisan hubs that meet global safety and ergonomic standards. Beyond infrastructure, this program also provided upskilling in CAD (Computer-Aided Design) for traditional hand-craftsmen, ensuring their skills remain relevant in a tech-driven market. By treating the artisan’s welfare as a core business sustainability goal, Kalyan Jewellers is moving to safeguard the human soul of the industry against the rising tide of automated mass production.

The ‘Eeco Ambulance’ Emergency Response

Expanding its long-standing legacy of community welfare, Bhima Jewellers recently launched its ‘Eeco Ambulance’ initiative. This project involved donating fully equipped ambulances to local health centres and NGOs to ensure rapid emergency responses in semi-urban areas and provided a permanent piece of medical infrastructure that remains active 24/7. By addressing the important time sensitive issues in emergency medicine, Bhima reinforced its role as a socially conscious brand that prioritises the physical safety and immediate well-being of the neighbourhoods it serves.

The Vision and Care Medical Grant

Chennai: GRT Jewellers strengthened their commitment to specialised healthcare by donating ₹66 lakh to medical institutions in Chennai. Majority of this grant included a ₹26 lakh contribution to Sankara Eye Hospital for an advanced Optical Biometer, a device essential for precise pre-surgical cataract assessments. Additional funds were provided to Sri Matha Trust and Sringeri Sharda Equitas Hospital for cancer treatments of underprivileged and elder patients. This precise philanthropy approach ensured that their CSR funds are used to purchase specific, life-saving diagnostic technology that government facilities often lack, directly improving patient outcomes.

The Khazanchi Charitable Trust

In a significant move towards institutionalised philanthropy, Khazanchi Jewellers Ltd. officially formalised the Khazanchi Charitable Trust. This transition marks a shift from traditional, ad-hoc giving to a structured, long-term social impact model. The Trust’s primary goal focuses on grassroots education and community healthcare, aiming to establish vocational training centres for rural youth. By creating a dedicated legal entity for its social initiatives, Khazanchi is integrating sustainability into its corporate DNA, setting a new benchmark for how publicly listed jewellery houses can drive professionalised, measurable change in India’s socio-economic landscape.
