An extension of Thangamayil’s ‘Women Work Culture’, the aim was to create opportunities for women employees to refresh their minds and reduce stress that comes with balancing work and family. The event bolstered brand image to the extent that competitors made enquiries
Madurai: Thangamayil Jewellery recently organized an in-house throwball tournament exclusively for its female employees, as part of the company’s ongoing internal programme ‘Women Work Culture’ aimed at improving workplace culture and employee well-being.
The jeweller had launched ‘Women Work Culture’ in 2024. While the first year focused on entertainment and stress relief activities, the second year is seeing the introduction of sports into the mix.
“We wanted to create opportunities for women employees to refresh their minds and reduce the stress that comes with balancing work and family,” said Ba. Ramesh, Joint Managing Director, ThangamayilJewellery. “Last year’s events revealed that many of our female staff have hidden talents. We conducted Kho Kho last year and discovered several natural athletes. That led to this year’s focus on throwball.”
The tournament was structured around four internal teams—Ganga, Yamuna, Kaveri and Mahanadi. Each team had nine players and three substitutes. Participation was voluntary, with internal coaches assisting in training and team formation.
The initiative aligns with Thangamayil’s broader commitment to creating a supportive work environment. “We don’t just say we take care of our employees—we act on it. These events show that we care not only about their work performance but also their health and happiness,” said Ramesh.
According to the organizers, the tournament was designed to promote teamwork and leadership. “Every team had a captain and vice-captain. They were responsible for communication, coordination and motivating their teammates. This built leadership skills and camaraderie,” Ramesh added.
The winning and runner-up teams received cash prizes and useful home products as rewards. “A prize could be a tiffin box or something simple, but the joy it brings is real,” Ramesh observed.
Ramesh noted that the response from staff has been positive, with employees requesting that such events be held every two months. “These activities are making our people feel safe and valued. They are not looking to move to other companies, which speaks of the sense of belonging we’re creating,” he stated.
Thangamayil has also shared videos and photos from the event on social media platforms like LinkedIn, drawing attention from industry peers. “Many competitors have called us asking how we came up with this idea. It’s helping strengthen our brand image in the jewellery retail space,” Ramesh said.
Thangamayil Jewellery has its flagship at Nethaji Road in Madurai. It turned a public limited company in 2007 and released its maiden equity shares in 2010, which listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Limited and National Stock Exchange (NSE) Limited. Today, the company has 50 Thangamayil showrooms and 10 Thangamayil Plus exclusive silver showrooms, taking the total number of retail outlets to 60.
