The jewellery ecosystem in Dharmanagar is fragmented and largely unorganized, but the market sees substantial wedding jewellery buying by locals
Dharmanagar: A new retail brand, Hare Krishna Jewellery, began its journey with the launch of its first showroom in the Babubazar area of Dharmanagar in Tripura on Akshaya Tritiya. The showroom was formally inaugurated under the aegis of prominent entrepreneur Buddha Gupta, Founder of Hare Krishna Jewellery.
The inauguration ceremony began in the morning with Vedic chants and traditional rituals, marking the start of the new business journey in the presence of local dignitaries.
Following the religious ceremonies, the showroom was officially opened to the public. Speaking on the occasion, Gupta stated that the brand’s primary goal is to offer customers high-quality jewellery with modern designs and authenticity. He also emphasized its commitment to earning customers’ trust while bringing innovation to the local market.
A day before the inauguration, Buddha Gupta held a press conference to announce the launch. Addressing the media, Gupta stated that the primary objective of his new venture was not just to establish a business, but also to raise awareness among customers about the quality and purity of jewellery. He mentioned that for the past five years, he had been operating under a franchise with a reputed jewellery company in Agartala. However, after the expiry of that agreement, he had decided to launch this new brand independently under the name ‘Hare Krishna Jewellery’.

Speaking about pricing, Gupta assured that jewellery at Hare Krishna Jewellery would be priced competitively, making it more affordable for the general public. He also emphasized that the needs of lower middle-class and middle-class customers would be considered, and a wide range of jewellery across various budget categories made available for them.
Tripura’s jewellery market is transitioning from an unorganized, tradition-led ecosystem to a hybrid structure. The size of the market is relatively small, and has a distinct dual character— a strong base deeply rooted in tribal culture and craftsmanship, alongside a growing organized gold and diamond retail segment.
While a few established jewellers still dominate due to the trust factor and legacy, the entry of brands like KISNA and the introduction of newer categories such as diamonds and lightweight jewellery indicate gradual consolidation and premiumization.
Dharmanagar, specifically, is a small but important commercial hub in North Tripura, serving as the primary retail cluster for the town and surrounding rural catchment areas. The jewellery ecosystem in Dharmanagar is fragmented and largely unorganized, with small independent stores clustered in market areas, catering to primarily low ticket-size customers. However, the market sees substantial wedding jewellery buying by locals.
Overall, Tripura presents a culturally rich jewellery market, that is beginning to align with broader Indian jewellery retail trends, and has plenty of potential for growth.
