Sri Lanka’s Diamond Dreams sets up Coimbatore facility, bringing innovative ‘Floating Diamond’ closer to Indian retailers

This strategic expansion allows the brand to offer faster delivery timelines, competitive pricing, and greater customization, while safeguarding its proprietary technology and international quality standards, even as the brand seeks to position itself as a symbol of modern luxury in India

Coimbatore: Sri Lanka-based Diamond Dreams International, global pioneer of the ‘Floating Diamond’ technology, has just entered India by setting up a manufacturing unit in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Originating from a pioneering invention in Sri Lanka over 35 years ago, the brand’s patented ‘Floating Diamond’ setting remains unmatched worldwide.

Notably, the Floating Diamond technology is a revolutionary approach to diamond setting. Traditional jewellery settings involve metal prongs or bezels to secure diamonds, often obscuring parts of the gemstone. In contrast, Diamond Dreams’ technology uses a clear carbon compound that holds the diamond without any metal, allowing the entire diamond to be visible from all angles, giving it a ‘floating’ appearance. This technique not only enhances the brilliance of diamonds but also adds to their durability and longevity.

Diamond Dreams seeks to position its Floating Diamond jewellery as a symbol of modern luxury. “In the Indian market, where jewellery is deeply personal and culturally significant, our aim is to offer something refreshingly unique: diamonds that appear to float, capturing light and attention with every movement. We are targeting a new generation of buyers — urban, style-conscious individuals who appreciate craftsmanship but also crave innovation and individuality. Our designs are lightweight yet impactful, making them perfect for both daily wear and special occasions. This makes Floating Diamond jewellery a compelling alternative to traditional heavy-set pieces. We aim to establish Floating Diamond jewellery as the new expression of understated luxury in India,” says Pearl Chandrawansa, Managing Director, Diamond Dreams.

“When diamonds are set using this technology, 100% of the diamond is exposed, and that makes the diamond look 20-30% bigger as compared to a conventional setting. Once it is set, it is permanent, so we offer all jewellers lifetime guarantee on the setting. Thanks to this technology, the jewellery can also take heat up to 260°F, so the wearer can cook and go about their day-to-day work without thinking about the diamond falling off from their jewellery,” Chandrawansa explains. “Jewellery products can be completely dismantled without any material loss by our specialized factory. This gives our jewellery partners an edge over traditional setting methods, and slow-moving products can be remodelled without loss.”

Led by the original team, Diamond Dreams has continuously expanded its creative range—from diamonds to rubies and pearls—upholding precision, craftsmanship, and design innovation in every collection. With the Coimbatore facility, Diamond Dreams aims to redefine everyday luxury in India by blending artisanal skill with advanced setting techniques.

Assurance of local manufacturing

Participating in the India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) over the past two years, Diamond Dreams saw growing enthusiasm from Indian retailers—not only for the uniqueness of its designs but also for local accessibility. While the brand’s offerings were well received, it became clear that there was a strong preference for sourcing within India. In response, Diamond Dreams has launched its dedicated three-storey production facility in Coimbatore, aimed exclusively at serving the India market.

“Indian retailers wanted the assurance of local manufacturing without compromising on global quality. The Coimbatore unit is our commitment to that trust,” says Chandrawansa.

This strategic expansion allows the brand to offer faster delivery timelines, competitive pricing, and greater customization, while safeguarding its proprietary Floating Diamond technology and international quality standards. “Taxes and costs related to imports from India led us to take a bold step to manufacture in India for India – to offer the price advantage to our partners and the final consumer,” Chandrawansa states.

A bold new design language

In a market deeply rooted in tradition, Diamond Dreams offers a bold new design language. Their creations speak to India’s growing base of urban, style-conscious consumers seeking luxury that is personal, versatile, and fashion-forward. From lightweight statement pieces to exclusive artisanal creations, the brand’s portfolio appeals to a new generation that values craftsmanship, meaning and modernity.

The Coimbatore facility is currently set to produce 10,000 pieces of Floating Diamond jewellery per month, with plans to expand to 25,000 pieces as demand increases. The production line covers a wide material spectrum—including diamonds, pearls, and mother-of-pearl and all precious stones—offering flexibility in design of all shapes and sizes. Equipped with both traditional and modern manufacturing technologies, including frameless construction, multi-metal integration, and laser-cut gold, the unit empowers designers to innovate without limits.

While the flagship Diamond Dreams factory in Colombo continues to serve global markets, the new Coimbatore unit marks a strategic shift to align with India’s evolving jewellery landscape—one that blends deep-rooted tradition with a growing appetite for innovation. The brand is especially focused on engaging a younger, style-conscious demographic seeking lightweight, versatile, and personalized jewellery. Designed with this audience in mind, the Floating Diamond collection offers elegance, fluidity and modern appeal.

Collaboration with Indian partners

By partnering with retailers, distributors and corporates, and collaborating with Indian designers on forward-thinking collections, Diamond Dreams is positioning itself as a defining name in contemporary Indian jewellery, bringing next-generation luxury to the forefront.

In a style-conscious, fast-evolving market like India, Diamond Dreams’ combination of technical precision and bold design thinking makes it highly relevant. From white-labelled collections to branded partnerships and bespoke commissions, Diamond Dreams is making bold strides in India, with a focus on engaging younger consumers through customization, contemporary design, and compelling story-telling. “Our approach has always been driven by relentless innovation and collaboration,” says Chandrawansa. “While our technology is the foundation, we encourage creative freedom—working closely with emerging and established designers to stay ahead of trends.”

Following IIJS, the brand was approached by a diverse group of forward-thinking designers eager to explore the possibilities of its unique Floating Diamond setting. These collaborations are producing collections that don’t just follow trends, but define them.

For Diamond Dreams, established in 2009, India is more than a market—it is a creative and cultural muse, perfectly aligned with the brand’s vision of modern luxury. With a history of success in markets like the Middle East and the US, Diamond Dreams is poised to make a significant impact in India.
