By allowing employees to connect beyond their daily roles, the company moved them towards strengthening organizational objectives and more efficiency
Madurai: Thangamayil Jewellery recently hosted the ‘TFM Premier League’, an internal cricket tournament designed to strengthen employee engagement while supporting workforce alignment and operational efficiency. The initiative brought together the company’s support staff in a structured format that blended sport with organizational objectives.
The tournament featured four teams formed from a mix of departments to ensure balanced participation. Held at a dedicated cricket ground, the league saw overall participation of nearly 100 employees out of a total support staff strength of 1,000, with non-playing staff contributing to coordination and event management. The format enabled interaction among employees who do not typically work together, creating a platform for cross-functional communication beyond operational roles.
The primary focus of the initiative was to build team alignment, improve coordination, and encourage participation in activities outside daily work routines. The company also ensured inclusion across age groups, with fair representation within the tournament, reinforcing a more integrated workforce structure.
Ba. Ramesh, Joint Managing Director, Thangamayil Jewellery, said, “The TFM Premier League was planned as an internal engagement platform where our support staff could connect outside the workplace structure. It created an opportunity for teams to collaborate in a different setting while maintaining discipline and focus.”
The structure of the tournament required teams to plan strategies, assign roles and adapt during matches, mirroring decision-making processes within their business functions. This parallel between sport and work enabled participants to experience coordination, accountability and time management in a practical setting, directly improving workplace behaviour.
Ramesh added, “Such initiatives support a connected workforce. When employees engage in shared activities, it reflects in how they communicate and perform within the organization afterwards.”
Beyond the cricket tournament, Thangamayil Jewellery has been consistently driving employee engagement through the broader TFM Premier League, a year-long internal platform featuring multiple sports and talent events. Structured around house-based teams for both men and women, the initiative includes activities such as volleyball, athletics, indoor games and fun relays, with points awarded across events. The programme culminates in an annual celebration recognizing top-performing teams, reinforcing a culture of participation, collaboration and team-driven performance.
From a business perspective, the initiative reflects a structured approach to linking employee engagement with retail execution, where improved internal communication and alignment can translate into smoother store operations and enhanced customer experience.
With initiatives such as the TFM Premier League, Thangamayil Jewellery continues to invest in internal engagement initiatives that align employee development with measurable business outcomes, strengthening its organizational culture.
Thangamayil Jewellery’s flagship store is located at Nethaji Road in Madurai. It turned a public limited company in 2007 and released its maiden equity shares in 2010, which listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Limited and National Stock Exchange (NSE) Limited. Today, the company has 66 retail outlets across Thangamayil showrooms and Thangamayil Plus Exclusive Silver showrooms.
