Sabyasachi becomes the first Indian designer to grace Met Gala carpet
The popular Indian designer’s ensemble features high jewellery and a duster coat from Sabyasachi Resort 2024 collection
New York: Fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, walked the Met Gala carpet recently, being the first ever Indian fashion designer to walk the prestigious platform. The popular designer attended the recently held Met Gala 2024 at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday, May 6.
Known for his exquisite attention to detail and penchant for intricate embellishments, Sabyasachi’s designs evoke a sense of regal grandeur while celebrating India’s rich cultural heritage. He aced the theme of ‘The Garden of Time’ with a chic trouser-shirt combo.
On Tuesday, the jeweller took to Instagram and uploaded a series of stunning images of himself, accompanied by the caption, “As the galloping horde of mechanisation, modernisation and uniformity marches ever closer, it is craft, that embodiment of human touch, tradition and diversity, that will protect culture from the passage of time.”
He layered his look with tourmalines, pearls, emeralds, and diamonds from Sabyasachi High Jewellery. He sported tinted sunglasses, brown loafers footwear and the embroidered cotton duster coat from the Sabyasachi Resort 2024 collection. The intricate floral embroidery all over and golden sequin borders, added a touch of glam factor.
This year, the couturier has also created Alia Bhatt’s outfit for the much-awaited fashion event. For her second appearance, the Brahmastra actor was seen in a sheer pastel-coloured sari that “pays homage to nature’s beauty, echoing the earth, sky, and sea,” replete with embroidered delicate floral motifs using “silk floss, glass beading, and semi-precious gemstones”.
Every year, the Met Gala is organised on the first Monday of May for the who’s who of the fashion and entertainment industries. Curated by former Vogue editor Anna Wintour, the event is hosted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This year, the theme is The Garden of Time.
