MILAN SHAH – KALAMANDIR JEWELLERS WINS THE SUPPLY CHAIN INNOVATION MD OF THE YEAR

Keeping the supply chain well-oiled and perfectly timed is a constant struggle even for big chain-store brands. Hallmarking, UID and specific customer demands are just a few of the hurdles the retailers face while sourcing inventory, especially during the peak sales season.

Milan Shah devised a remarkable software solution for the regional retail chain that he heads. At Kalamandir Jewellers, vendors are automatically informed, daily, about inventory levels. Since four-fifths of the inventory consists of popular jewellery designs that attract a lot of demand, these sales are predictable. With good data, Mr Shah’s company can assure its manufacturing partners of reliable uptake. Products are then manufactured and delivered within three or four days of an alert.

Regular, dependable orders are a blessing for manufacturers and have encouraged them to do their best for Kalamandir. The system works equally well over longer timescales. Data and the software give Mr Shah the ability to place orders a whole year ahead, for particular product ranges. With expectations aligned at both ends of the supply chain, Kalamandir never falls short. This kind of efficiency cannot be achieved manually.

Mr. Shah has improved on this already streamlined system by creating a design bank specific to each vendor. Even seasonal requirements for particular designs and certain types of jewellery are met, successfully, without the jeweller having to intervene or even inquire. Inventory costs are optimised, as production, as well as purchasing, are automatically aligned to the expected demand.

Mr. Shah is working to shift labelling and transportation, as well, to the vendor’s end. Giving this level of access to his vendors pays off by excluding inefficiencies like duplication of barcoding and tagging at the retail end.

Kalamandir is pioneering the kind of effortless real-time functioning that offers a model for the entire industry, where most players continue to struggle with inventory management.
