Sanya Khandelwal, Co-founder of Kicky and Perky, discusses leading a digital-first jewellery brand, the challenges of expanding into offline retail, and how emotional intelligence shapes her leadership approach in the evolving jewellery industry.
Edited Excerpts:
Please describe your role in the organisation.
As the Co-founder of Kicky and Perky, my role combines both strategic and creative aspects. I manage the financial health of the brand, ensuring we meet growth targets, and aligning with broader business goals. I’m also involved in the design process, bringing in global insights to shape our creative direction. It’s a dynamic mix of analytical thinking and creative vision that I truly enjoy.
What contributions are you particularly proud of?
Building Kicky and Perky from scratch is something I’m extremely proud of. A key milestone was our collaboration with Cosmopolitan, which confirmed our creative direction. Another significant moment was achieving Rs. 10 crore in FY 2023–24. Now, we’re targeting Rs. 50 crore, expanding across 10+ online platforms and offline retail. Navigating both the creative and operational sides of the business has made me more confident as a leader.
What leadership qualities and skills are essential in your field?
In jewellery, emotional intelligence is crucial for leadership. It’s not only about understanding customers but also connecting with the people behind the brand. At Kicky and Perky, empathy, active listening, and creating a culture of trust are key to our growth. Leadership for me is about collaboration and purpose, not control.
Have mentors or role models influenced your journey?
My father has been my greatest mentor. From him, I’ve learned perseverance and resilience, especially during tough times. His unwavering support and wisdom have shaped my leadership style, giving me the courage to keep pushing forward through challenges.
What advice would you give women aspiring to leadership in your field?
I encourage women to embrace strategic thinking and to be unapologetic about their ambition. While empathy is important, leadership also requires clarity, confidence, and the courage to make bold decisions. Challenge norms and own your success confidently.
What industry changes have you observed since joining?
The industry has shifted towards conscious consumption, with consumers prioritizing value, craftsmanship, and authenticity. Digital transformation has also opened up opportunities, particularly through D2C models and influencer-driven discovery. There’s a lot of potential for innovation in the jewellery sector.
What philosophy guides you through challenges and successes?
Consistency is my guiding principle. Whether in decision-making or communication, consistency builds trust and momentum. I prioritize long-term growth over quick wins, ensuring we stay true to our core values.
