Chennai: GRT Jewellers has launched the GRT Mahalakshmi Boys Hostel in Porur, Chennai, providing free accommodation and nutritious meals to students from economically challenged backgrounds pursuing higher education. The initiative focuses on reducing living expenses for outstation students moving to Chennai for college education, an area that continues to remain a major financial hurdle for many families.

The hostel currently houses 60 first-year students and has the capacity to accommodate up to 200 students in phases over the coming years. Every academic year, additional batches of first-year students will be inducted, creating a structured and continuing support system instead of a one-time scholarship-based intervention.

Unlike general educational aid programmes, the hostel initiative has been designed around specific eligibility criteria linked to both academic performance and financial need. Students applying for accommodation are required to have scored above 70% in Class XII examinations and belong to families with an annual income below Rs 3 lakh.

For many students entering colleges in metropolitan cities, accommodation and food expenses often become as significant as tuition fees. By eliminating hostel and mess charges entirely, initiatives such as the GRT Mahalakshmi Boys Hostel address a more practical aspect of educational accessibility.

The initiative also reflects a larger shift in how jewellery retailers are approaching community welfare programmes. Instead of short-term donations or seasonal outreach activities, several family-run businesses are increasingly investing in long-term educational infrastructure projects that create sustained impact over multiple years. Student housing initiatives, in particular, help businesses contribute directly to social mobility and regional development.

The hostel’s phased intake model supports continuity and scalability. As new batches are added annually, the initiative creates a recurring support ecosystem where students can complete their higher education within a stable environment. The company has also outlined monitoring measures linked to academic performance, requiring students to submit semester results periodically to continue availing the facility.

GRT Jewellers is looking at the hostel as a long-term educational support platform rather than a standalone CSR activity.

Founded in 1964, GRT Jewellers has a strong presence across South India and beyond. The brand operates 66+ showrooms across India and one international store in Singapore, offering gold, diamond, silver and platinum jewellery.
