Gemfields all set to celebrate May as ‘Emerald Month’, bringing the colour green into focus

Emeralds are the birthstone for May, therefore they take centre-stage in the company’s month-long initiative around the rich green gemstones

London: Coloured gemstone mining company Gemfields has marked May as ‘Emerald Month’, highlighting the significance of colour and the enduring appeal of emeralds in the global gemstone market.

Emeralds are traditionally associated with hope, renewal and growth, with their rich green hue often linked to spring and new beginnings. As May’s birthstone, emeralds take centre stage in the company’s month-long focus on the colour green.

From a colour theory perspective, green blends the calming stability of blue with the warmth of yellow, creating a sense of balance and harmony. The colour of emeralds is derived from trace elements such as chromium, vanadium and iron.

Gemfields noted that Zambian emeralds, in particular, are characterized by relatively lower vanadium content, resulting in a distinctive bluish-green tone and often eye-clean crystals. A slightly higher iron content contributes to stronger bonding of elements, giving these stones a consistent, vivid colour with a subtle blue tint.

Highly valued emeralds typically display even colour saturation and a vivid hue, factors that have long driven their desirability. The company also underscored the historical fascination with gemstones, whose colour remains unchanged over time, reinforcing their perceived rarity and value.

Gemfields works with a range of international jewellery brands, offering gemstone supply for diverse design applications across markets.

A wholly owned subsidiary of Gemfields Group Limited, Gemfields is dual-listed on the Johannesburg and London AIM stock exchanges. The group operates and holds a 75% stake in Kagem Mining in Zambia, one of the world’s leading emerald mines, and Montepuez Ruby Mining in Mozambique. It also holds interests in gemstone licences across Zambia, Mozambique and Madagascar. The company is headquartered in London, with offices in Bangkok, Jaipur, Johannesburg and Mauritius.
