Election Wing Personnel Seize Cash, Jewels Worth Over Rs 3 crore

Unaccounted cash totalling Rs 2.25 crore and jewellery worth Rs one crore were seized Saturday at different places in western Tamil Nadu by the Static Surveillance Teams and Flying Squads of the election department, official sources said here.
Foreign currencies – 35,000 USD (Rs 24.29 lakh), Singapore dollars 22,000 (Rs 11.31 lakh) and 10,000 Euros (Rs 7.84 lakh) – were found in the two-wheeler of Jayaraman, working in a private firm, who was on the way to the airport, the sources said.
The currencies, totally worth Rs 43.44 lakh, were handed over to the income tax authorities who were verifying the documents he has produced during the check in Singanallur assembly constituency near here, they said.
A sum of Rs 1.83 crore was seized from a van in Salem, about 160 km from here.
The cash was supposed to be deposited in an ATM, but the money was handed over to the sub-treasury by the squad as there were no relevant documents with the occupants of the van, the sources said.
Gold and silver ornaments worth Rs one crore were seized from a vehicle at Udmalpet in nearby Tirupur district.
The occupants claimed the valuables belong to a jewellery shop in Coimbatore. However, for lack of documents, the ornaments were seized and the vehicle was impounded, the sources said.
A sum of Rs 8.24 lakh in cash was seized during checks at nine places in Nilgiris district, they said.
