Bengaluru: The C Krishniah Chetty (CKC) Group of Jewellers has crafted a ring entirely from a single lab-grown diamond, eliminating the need for any metal. The journey began nearly three years ago when a client asked if a ring could be made without gold. The team accepted the challenge, and crash.club from CKC ultimately created a 7.93-carat faceted diamond band formed entirely from the stone itself.
Chaitanya V Cotha, Executive Director, C Krishniah Chetty Group, was quoted by The Indian Express as saying that ittook years of trial, learning and refinement: the first year focused on research, the second on experimentation, and the third on perfecting every micron. “As a team, we’ve always believed that when an idea challenges convention, it deserves to be pursued no matter how improbable it may seem. What began as a client’s request soon became our collective pursuit to see if we could let the diamond stand entirely on its own, with no support, no metal and no compromise. We remain deeply grateful to the client whose single question redefined our limits,” Cotha told the newspaper.
The project required the design team at crash.club to return to first principles, studying the diamond as a precision-engineered crystal rather than a conventional gemstone. “We used a single-crystal CVD-grown diamond, carefully mapped its atomic orientation and ensured that no cleavage plane intersected key stress points. Every curve and internal transition was modelled to distribute pressure evenly. It was engineering at a microscopic level. The result is a structure where beauty and strength co-exist naturally, without compromise,” Cotha explained.
Traditional hand polishing and diamond-on-diamond finishing was then used to bring it to life, though more than 70% of the original diamond mass was lost in the process.The ring does not follow any classic diamond cut but is defined by continuous curvature, balancing light and strength. “Each curve and polish point is intentional, balancing optical harmony with structural integrity. It’s not cut, it’s sculpted,” Cotha added.
Customization is possible, but each ring must be engineered from scratch, considering ring size, wall thickness and stress mapping. Only the purest single-crystal CVD diamonds with VVS+ clarity and D–F colour are suitable. Each piece,priced Rs 49 lakh onwards, has to undergo advanced stress testing and microscopic evaluation before leaving the atelier.
