Mumbai: Mia by Tanishq recently added a unique element to its Old Gold Exchange Programme by linking it with a tree plantation initiative, creating a direct connection between jewellery purchase and environmental contribution. The programme aligned with the brand’s focus on making fine jewellery part of everyday wear while integrating responsible practices into the customer journey.

The initiative primarily focused on supporting biodiversity by contributing to habitat restoration in Sikkim, particularly for Red Pandas. Plantation efforts included bamboo and native species that support the ecosystem, linking the programme to a specific environmental outcome rather than a general sustainability message.

The initiative built on Mia’s ongoing tree plantation efforts, under which the brand has planted more than 16,000 trees over the past four years. This year, the programme was expanded to include a commitment to plant one tree for every gram of gold exchanged during the month of June. By connecting gold exchange with an environmental objective, the brand positioned an existing retail service as both a product upgrade and contribution to a wider cause.

Shyamala Ramanan, Business Head, Mia by Tanishq, said, “Gold exchange is already one of the most sustainable ways to refresh jewellery. By linking it to tree plantation, we wanted to make that choice more meaningful, where every gram exchanged contributes to a measurable outcome.”

The process was designed to remain simple and transparent. Customers visiting Mia stores could use Karatmeter technology for a purity check of their existing gold and exchange it without any deduction towards new purchases. Each gram of gold exchanged translated into a tree planted through a partner organization, which also issued digital certificates and managed plantation sites to ensure continuity. This structure allowed customers to participate in the initiative without altering their purchase behaviour.

Jewellery offered under the programme included lightweight gold and diamond pieces designed for regular use, often positioned as entry points into fine jewellery. By encouraging exchange, the brand enabled customers to update their collections while remaining within an established spending cycle, supporting both product movement and inventory refresh.

Marketing for the initiative was driven through digital platforms, where the brand highlighted the environmental contribution aspect. Social media content included customer stories, plantation updates, and explanatory formats outlining how each transaction translated into impact. This narrative approach helped extend the campaign beyond store interactions and encouraged wider conversations among customers.

Ramanan added, “Customers appreciated that their purchase or exchange contributed to something beyond the product. It created a deeper connection and encouraged participation.”

The campaign recorded plantation of over 15,000 trees in June, making it the brand’s largest drive to date. Customer participation was supported by both awareness and ease of execution, with the programme driving engagement across store and digital channels.

Such initiatives demonstrate how purpose-led programmes can support brand building and customer acquisition. By embedding sustainability within an existing service, retailers can create additional value without altering the core transaction.
