US Demand Puts India’s Lab-Grown Diamond Ambitions on the Global Map

Loose lab-grown diamonds illustrate growing US demand and India’s ambitions to expand its global jewellery market presence.

A ₹60-crore export order from the US highlights the growing role of American consumers in the lab-grown diamond market — and India’s push to emerge as a global LGD jewellery hub.

Goldiam International’s latest ₹60-crore order for lab-grown diamond jewellery from US-based international clients offers another indication of how closely India’s emerging LGD jewellery business is tied to the American market.

The orders, which are expected to be executed by December 31, 2026, follow a ₹50-crore export order secured by Goldiam in August. For India’s jewellery exporters, the development comes as the US continues to be one of the most important markets driving global adoption of lab-grown diamonds.

The American consumer has moved considerably faster towards LGDs than many other major jewellery markets. BriteCo’s 2026 data shows that lab-grown diamonds accounted for 51% of newly appraised US engagement-ring centre stones in the first half of 2026, compared with 47% in 2025. The category is also expanding beyond bridal into earrings, pendants, bracelets and other jewellery.

Price remains a major driver. The significant gap between natural and lab-grown diamonds has allowed US consumers to access larger stones at lower price points, while also supporting the category’s expansion among younger and self-purchasing consumers.

For Indian manufacturers, this represents an opportunity to capture value beyond polished-stone exports. Goldiam’s latest order is for finished lab-grown diamond jewellery, positioning Indian manufacturing, design and production capabilities directly within a growing international consumer market.

The opportunity is particularly relevant for the wider South Asian jewellery trade. Jewellers across North America and other international markets are increasingly operating in a consumer environment where lab-grown diamonds have become part of the mainstream jewellery conversation. As awareness grows, Indian manufacturers could play a larger role in supplying the category to independent jewellers and larger international retailers.

India builds its LGD ecosystem

India, meanwhile, is looking to strengthen its position across the lab-grown diamond value chain.

The Indian government’s push began with the 2023 Union Budget, which announced a five-year research and development grant to support indigenous production of lab-grown diamond seeds and machinery. The initiative subsequently led to the establishment of the India Centre for Lab Grown Diamond (InCent-LGD) at IIT Madras, backed by an approved outlay of ₹242.96 crore over five years.

The ambition extends beyond simply producing more diamonds. India wants to develop domestic technological capabilities, reduce dependence on imported equipment and strengthen its position as a global manufacturing centre.

That strategy could become increasingly important as the international LGD market matures. With production technology becoming more accessible and prices continuing to decline, manufacturing efficiency alone may no longer provide a lasting advantage. Jewellery companies will increasingly need to compete through design, branding, distribution and consumer trust.

India is also beginning to develop a domestic market for LGD jewellery. Companies such as Goldiam are expanding their consumer-facing presence, creating a two-way opportunity: exporting finished jewellery to established markets such as the US while simultaneously developing demand within India.

Goldiam’s latest order therefore offers a useful snapshot of the larger global shift. American consumers are helping drive demand, while Indian companies and policymakers are building the manufacturing and technology ecosystem to serve it.
