The initiative follows an announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Sri Lanka in April 2025 to support skill development in the spirit of bilateral cooperation
Jaipur: India hosted a 20-member delegation of professionals from Sri Lanka’s gem and jewellery sector from December 1 to 20, 2025 under a ‘Training and Capacity Building Programme’. The delegation included participants from the gemstone cutting and polishing segments of Sri Lanka’s gem and jewellery industry.
The programme was organized following an announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Sri Lanka in April 2025. During the visit, India committed to providing 700 customized training slots each year for Sri Lankan professionals as part of bilateral cooperation focused on capacity building between the two countries.
The 20-day training programme was conducted by the Government of India at the Indian Institute of Gem & Jewellery in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The curriculum consisted of technical and thematic sessions that covered different stages of the gem and jewellery value chain. Training modules included cleaving and sawing, pre-forming, shaping, cutting and faceting, polishing, quality assessment and interactions with industry participants. These sessions were designed to support skill development and improve understanding of production and design processes.
As part of the programme, participants undertook site visits to gemstone manufacturing units in India. The visits provided exposure to production technologies, design development practices and retail operations within India’s gem and jewellery sector. The site visits formed part of the experiential learning component of the programme and allowed participants to observe processes followed across various segments of the industry.
The training programme supported the exchange of knowledge and contributed to the development of professional skills among the participants. It also helped strengthen institutional and industry linkages between India and Sri Lanka within the gem and jewellery sector.
The initiative reflects ongoing cooperation between India and Sri Lanka in the area of skill development and economic engagement. Through such programmes, both countries continue to work towards building technical capacity, supporting knowledge sharing and strengthening collaboration within the gem and jewellery industry.
