The revised format unifies how heating, flux residues and high-density glass fillings are reported, offering clearer information for the trade
Jaipur: IIGJ Lab (a project by GJEPC) has revised its ruby treatment descriptions to align with global gemological standards. The Lab provides independent quality assessment services for gemstones and jewellery, and its ruby identification service is used by manufacturers, traders and retailers who seek clarity on treatment details.
From November 6, 2025, IIGJ Lab, sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, has updated the terminology used for ruby treatment descriptions. This update brings the Lab’s reporting practices in line with major gemological laboratories. Rubies are often heated with fluxes such as borax, which may be mixed with silica-based substances or high-density glass containing elements including lead, bismuth, barium, yttrium, and zirconium. The earlier approach listed these substances separately, taking into account heating with residues and silica-based substance in fissures, presence of high-density glass in fissures/cavities with flash effect, numerous gas bubbles, indistinct single crystal, colour concentrations, etc. The revised format presents them in unified descriptions on the reports issued by the Lab.
