GJEPC to assist IIJS Tritiya exhibitors to follow Model Code of Conduct and check bullion movement during election

With the enforcement of the Achar Sanhita, changes are expected for IIJS Tritiya exhibitors. Efforts have been made to establish SOPs in coordination with relevant govt authorities to streamline operations for exhibitors

MUMBAI: Sabyasachi Ray, the Executive Director of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), recently shed light on the strategies being employed to assist exhibitors at the India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) Tritiya in navigating potential challenges posed by the Achar Sanhita or Model Code of Conduct, issued by the Election Commission of India.

The Achar Sanhita, also known as the Model Code of Conduct, serves as a vital framework ensuring the fairness and integrity of elections in India. It encompasses a set of guidelines governing the conduct of political parties and candidates during electoral processes, aimed at preventing undue influence on voters and maintaining the sanctity of the democratic process.

Regarding its impact on the gem and jewellery sector, the Achar Sanhita typically imposes restrictions on the movement of bullion, which is closely monitored during election periods to prevent potential misuse. However, it’s important to note that legitimate business activities, such as documented and accounted for transactions, like B2B transactions in jewellery, are not intended to be hindered.

During election periods, the Election Commission forms flying squads comprising local government administrations and enforcement agencies, such as GST, Income Tax, and police, to monitor and regulate the movement of unaccounted cash and undocumented valuables. While vigilance is heightened during this time, efforts are made to ensure that routine economic activities, including B2B transactions in sectors like gem and jewellery, proceed without unnecessary interruptions.

With the upcoming elections and the enforcement of the Achar Sanhita, changes are expected for IIJS Tritiya exhibitors, particularly in terms of enhanced monitoring of goods transportation. However, efforts have been made to establish Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in coordination with relevant government authorities to facilitate smooth operations for exhibitors.

GJEPC has actively engaged with Election Commission officials and other relevant government authorities to address any potential disruptions proactively. Measures include issuing comprehensive advisories to exhibitors, mapping goods movements, coordinating with authorities, and establishing a task force to intervene promptly in case of issues.

Through these proactive measures, GJEPC aims to assist exhibitors in navigating challenges posed by the Achar Sanhita during the IIJS Tritiya exhibition, ensuring minimal disruptions to their business operations.
