India invites Myanmar gem merchants to IIJS 2018

Myanmar jewellery makers invited to attend the India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) 2018 next month will be able to study some of India’s best designs and glean ideas and insight on how best to grow and promote locally-produced jewellery.

Sponsored by the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) and the Embassy of India, IIJS will be held in Mumbai, India from August 8 to 13.

This will enable local jewelers to improve their craft and promote locally-made jewellery both to a domestic and international audience.

“Myanmar is rich in raw gemstones like jade and rubies. But in order to add value to these stones such as using them to produce well-designed jewellery, local jewelers must come to India. Besides tapping into the Indian market for jewellery, Indian firms can also process the raw stones and distribute them,” said Shailesh Sangani, Convener-National Exhibitions from the GJEPC.

By visiting India, which re-exports processed jewellery using diamonds, gold and colorful gems after importing the raw stones, Myanmar gem merchants can also learn about the technologies and designs involved in making jewellery from raw materials, he said.

“Raw materials don’t have good price but finished products do. Myanmar has many raw stones while India has the technologies.  To combine these, you need to visit India and see for yourself. There are many processes involving different gems in India, “Sangani   said.

“India has various designs and machines. We can study their technologies. Diamond cutting mills in India are built like industrial zones in Myanmar. They have high-tech equipment. Our jewellery sector needs this technology to improve in future,” said U Aung Kyaw Myat, general secretary of the Myanmar Gems and Jewellery Entrepreneurs Association.

The Indian Government and GJEPC will provide hotel allowances for members of Myanmar Gems and Jewellery Entrepreneurs Association attending IIJS 2018.
